You can install a Crucial P3 M.2 NVMe SSD.

 

I installed a 512 GB M.2 NVMe SSD when I owned an EliteBook 840 G3 a long time ago.

 

The service manual (on page 2) states that a 256 GB M.2 NVMe gen3x4 SSD is supported.

Generally, M.2 NVMe SSDs have no capacity limit. You can install up to 4 TB  NVMe SSD.
