I just bought this; https://www.scandinavianphoto.no/samsung/x5-external-ssd-1tb-1tb and it does not register when I connect it.  In this thread, someone asks about another laptop, and the expert answers that his computer (the 840 G5) does have Thunderbolt 3 support.

I found a solution! If one presses the power button for more than 30 seconds all the drivers seem to install and things seem to fix themselves.

@DogBrain

I know the specs of my machine (also an HP 840 G5)  only says it has Thunderbolt™ port, I believe that is Thunderbolt™ 3 because it is compatible with Thunderbolt™ 3 docks.

Regards.

Thanks for the reply! Does that mean I need a docking device to connect a Thunderbolt 3 device to my laptop?

One thing to mention is that I bought a Samsung X5 SSD (https://www.scandinavianphoto.no/samsung/x5-external-ssd-1tb-1tb) with a Thunderbolt 3 connection. The disk is visible when connected, but I can not get any contact with it.
