I have a "HP Notebook - 15-ay137cl". I would like to know if an nvme ssd would be compatible with my laptop. If not nvme what is the recommended ssd that I can use as a replacement for my HDD? If I have to reinstall windows after the hard disk replacement how would I get the product keys?

You're very welcome.
If your notebook has a M.2 slot, you can go as high as 1 TB.
Those were just the drive sizes HP offered in the model series.
Here is the link to the Crucial memory/SSD report which lists the compatible SSD's for your notebook.

Hi:
If your notebook did not come with a M.2 SSD, it does not have a M.2 slot.
NVMe M.2 SSD's are not supported in the 15-ayXXX notebooks that came with M.2 drives from the factory, only SATA.
If you want to install a SSD, you would have to replace the 2.5" mechanical hard drive and replace it with a 2.5" SSD.
The W10 product key is in the BIOS. You don't need it to reinstall W10.
Your notebook should be supported by the HP cloud recovery tool, which you can use to create a bootable USB recovery drive that will reinstall W10, the drivers and the software that originally came with your notebook.
Here is an info link for how to use that utility.

Below is the link to the service manual, where you can find the supported drive types (chapter 1), and the hard drive removal and replacement procedure (chapter 6).

Good.
Then you will definitely be fine.
Please post back and let us know how your notebook's SSD upgrade project went, and if there happened to be a M.2 slot on the motherboard.
I would be very surprised if there was.
