I would like to replace my processor on my HP g6-1d73us  which is sandy bridge (2gen) (i5 2540M) with an ivy bridge (3gen) i5 3380M. I read in wikipedia that ivy bridge is backwards compatible with sandy bridge. Can I do this? Thanks.

That's true but does BIOS support this. Please check page #1 of a document called  Maintenance and Service Guide of the following link

Hi,

The CPU has to be supported by the notebook firmware. These are the supported CPUs for your model

You can see on page 77 of service manual
