I want to add an nvme ssd since im out of space on the 500 gb hd, can I put in any ssd or are there restrictions?

The series support Optane therefore its M.2 slot supports M.2 NVMe SSD drive. You can add M.2 NVMe SSD to your machine. Samsung 970EVO is a good choice.
