HP ENVY Laptop 17-bw0xxx, Prod # 4BQ20UA#ABL
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I want to increase my RAM. Right now I have a total of 12 GB of RAM, one 8 and one 4GB.  I am sure I can replace the 4GB with another 8GB to get to 16 GB. What  part do I need, where can I get this 8GB RAM (does it haver to be the exact same product/company which is already installed?) and who can install this.  Could I do this also myself? Please kindly advise.

Thanks

Peter Fassler

Technically anyone including you can do it. See pages 24-31 of the Service manual for "how to".

HP will not revoke the warranty unless the laptop is damaged in the process. The hard part is handling the rubber "feet" strips and getting the back cover separated from the front of the chassis. We can likely find you a video if that would make it easier.

@pfassler

Your machine is an HP ENVY - 17-BW0008CA. Part # for 8GB is 862398-855 (8GB, 2400MHz, PC4-17000, 1.2v DDR4 SODIMM). You can order from

   http://partsurfer.hp.com/Search.aspx?searchText=862398-855

or use part # to by elsewhere such as Amazon

You san also try Crucial to get compatible RAM (hope they have it)

Note: normally exactly same RAM will give you full benefit of dual channel architecture. Other RAM sticks may work and in some cases may not work at all.

Regards.

BH, Thanks for your reply and your suggestion. When I look at the HP support assistant I get the following information for the installed RAM:

8GB AData 2400MHz

4GB Micron 2400MHz

This seems to me to be two different manufacturers. Am I right?? I bought the Laptop at BestBuy and they told me (Geek Squad) that I have DDR3 Ram versus your suggestion of getting a DDR4. I am bit confused though which one is the right. Also, the part you suggested costs CAD278 from Partsurfer, which seems to be another brand then any of the two installed already.

Thank you in advance helping me to clarify these points.

Peter

Its DDR4....DDR3 can't run at 2400 mhz. Its not so much the specific manufacturer of the memory as it is the architecture...speed voltage density should be the same to assure dual channel operation.

Thanks for clarifying this to me. Last question is now who can install this Ram chip. Can this be done by any computer store? I looked at the bottom of my laptop and I have no idea if I could do that as there is one big plate with 3 screws but I don't know whats underneath or if it affetcs the DVD drive etc.

Thanks again

Peter
