No worries.
I have asked about it.
It may be Monday or Tuesday before I see an answer to the thread I created in the private subforum which is the HP Expert's interface with HP.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you.
HP Expert @Huffer gave me his perspective on the manual and your laptop configuration.
"This is one of the models where the hard drive or M.2 SATA mSSD is connected via the same SATA connector. Which type of drive you have is determined by the caddy you use. There is a caddy for a 2.5 inch drive and then a caddy for an M.2 board both of which connect to the motherboard via that single port. So if your laptop comes with a 2.5 inch hard drive or SSD in order to migrate to an M.2 you have to procure the correct adapter/caddy for the M.2. They are very pricey and the laptop only is shipped with the one type.
See p. 52
In this case the assembly to hold the M.2 is in 2 pieces sold as separate parts: a caddy and then a board that adapts the M.2 to have a standard SATA hard drive type connection.
See p 52 of the Maintenence & Service Guide.

I tell people who have this type of hardware not to switch from one type of drive to the other. If the laptop has a mechanical drive just get a 2.5 inch SATA SSD. A good 2.5 inch SATA SSD is just about as fast as an M.2 SATA disk.
SATA SSD. A good 2.5 inch SATA SSD is just about as fast as an M.2 SATA disk.

$57.75 for the adapter board:

For that money you can get a 240 gig SATA 2.5 inch SSD. "
His advice is sound. The 17" notebooks used to be different than this. They had two hard disk bays. The new models like yours are an either or situation.

Hi,
thank you for the information - I expected something like this.
Meanwhile I ordered a caddy for M.2 SSD as optical drive replacement:
...because I don't want to lose the big HDD as mass storage and the SSD (as you said) will only be SATA in any case. The optical drive is needed rarly and I still have another Laptop in case I need to insert a CD/DVD somewhere.
...delivery time "only" 26-54 days 😉
So, thank you for investigating!

It must have come via DHL. In the Netherlands many people say the letters stand for duurt heel lang. That translates to it takes a very long time to arrive.
