HP 250G6
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello everybody,

I have the same question already dscussed in

Install additional SSD into HP 250 G6

https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/Install-additional-SSD-into-HP....

My laptop is a 250 G6 i5 1WY61EA, I purchased a Kingston 500GB NVME SSD and when I mounted it on the SSD slot present on the pc motherboard, the pc refused to boot.

When pressing the on/off button simply nothing happens.

I called the italian HP technical assistance and they told me that it is possible to mount an NVME SSD on my pc and it will work, but it has to be the only disk drive present in the pc.

So, according to them, no additional SSD disk, as the pc allows just one internal disk drive, it being an SSD or HD.

Can anyone confirm this statement?

Thank you

I don't see any PCIe SSD support. So a NVME will not work. Exchange it with a M.2 Sata SSD.

Hi VH 2000, thanks for your help.

In my pc  there is a slot for NVME SSD. Of course I checked before purchasing the disk. 🙂

Please look at the picture enclosed, where the motherboard of my pc with the NVME SSD installed can be seen.

Yes, I know. M-Type and B-Type. You need the B-Type with 2 Slots. The NVMe has only 1 Slot.

thank you VH 2000.

I checked the pdf, page 53. The assembly shown depicts the SSD in the same place where in my pc the traditional HDD is standing.

On the motherboard of my pc, instead, an SSD slot stands in a completely different place. Such that if we define horizontal the placement of the SSD in page 53 of the PDF document, the slot in my pc puts the SSD in a vertical way, besides the HDD, running over its flat cable.

Moreover, the shape of the slot seems compatibile with M2 SSD.

Anyway the advice given to me by the italian HP Technical Assistance is wrong. Even removing the HDD, the pc refuses to switch on.

When I asked once again to HP Technical Assistance, another consultant told me that HP Technical Documentation says that no upgrading  can be made to pc's not even for upgrading RAM 😄

It's good that you posted the picture! It looks so different to the information given in the manual.

So you can use the M.2 SSD as the System drive and the 2,5" disk as a file storage drive.

Good luck

Thank you for your wish, VH 2000.

Of course manuals, PDF's and technical documentation are very helpful.

But what when the reality seems to be different from what they tell?

So, while I was removing the NVME SSD I took some more picture. Maybe they could be helpful for someone else.

First a complete view of the motherboard, with both disks in place.250g6 motherboard.jpg

Way different from service manual pics.

Maybe I am wrong, but the manual does not even mention the presence of the SSD slot depicted here.

Here a close view of the SSD slot. I could be wrong once again, but does it not seem compatible with NVME disks?

Then, even a turret is provided, complete with its screw.

torretta.jpg

Everything seems to be ready to receive an NVME SSD disk.

But it does not work.

Why the HP Official Technical Assistance consultants say discordant things, none of which is correct?

Such informations could come from their imagination, or maybe they found both on HP official documentation?

I know. It fit's but it's not compatible. SSDs are connected to the southbridge chipsets and NVMes directly to the CPU. (formerly northbridge)

HP Recommended

Yes, my 250 G6 has Southbridge.

So, you think that I could insert an M2 SSD in the same slot and it will work together with the HDD that was already in the pc?

Or maybe could be more secure purchasing an SSD with HDD 2,5" form factor?

You know, this info is critical because I already have an NVME that is useless for me, it would make no sense having a second  useless drive.

Thank you so much for your help.

I recommend to look for a computer shop and check if they have a M.2 Sata SSD. Usually their price is higher than in an online shop, but you can make the compatibility test. That's life. The risc is everywhere. 😁

I run a Samsung 860 Pro (2,5" SSD) together with a Samsung 860 EVO M.2 Sata on a DELL machine without any problem.
