HP EliteBook 845 14 inch G10 Notebook PC (70A39AV)
Microsoft Windows 11
Hello

I have a problem with HP EliteBook 845 14 inch G10 (product 8F8A6UA) and "Active Smart Card Reader".
Originally my laptop came without an "Active Smart Card Reader", so I procured a replacement part "N02323-001" (Card reader) and N09040-001 (Cable kit).

I have successfully installed the smart card reader inside of the laptop, but it is not being detected in Bios or Windows.
In Bios under "Advanced" -> "Port Options" I don't see smart card reader option or smart card reader power savings option.
In Windows the smart card reader is not being detected and doesn't show up in Windows device manager (with the card inserted or not), the driver 1.9.17.2321 Rev.A "Alcor Micro Smart Card Reader Drive" is installed.

This I have tried to resolve the issue.

- Reseat the ribbon cables from both ends
- Perform bios settings reset to factory defaults
- Bios version rollback
- Bios version update
- Hardware diagnostics (it doesn't show anything about the smart card reader)

It seems bios doesn't even try to initialize the smart card reader board, could it be because the laptop originally came without a smart card reader?
Is it something configured by Bios feature byte?

Thank you for your support.

The difference in BIOS does appear to be what is causing the issue.

The coding in the BIOS ROM file for the 845 G10 version isn't there for the  onboard Smart card reader to be recognized as installed or make it accessible.

You are  going to need to continue using the USB Smart card reader

I would consider reinstalling the chipset driver.

The disk.inf driver and disk.sys drivers are the  Windows 11OS interface to an SSD/HDD and SDHC card when plugged into the media card reader.

Use the View devices by driver in the Device Manager before plugging in an SDHC card in the card reader.

Right click anywhere and select and click on "scan for hardware changes".

Thank you for your input and trying to help Erico.

Unfortunately, your recommendation didn't help.

Under "Active Smart Card reader" I mean the device for reading: CAC cards, military cards or generic ISO-7816 cards.

I have gotten the replacement part from HP 845 G9 (G9 and G10 share the same part number), and what I have noticed is that there is some difference in BIOS configuration.

I think because the "Smart card" option is not present in BIOS on G10, the motherboard USB header is not active and this is why the smart card reader is not being detected in Windows.

The question is how to make this option appear in the BIOS.... or is it restricted because original configuration didn't include the smart card reader.

If it is for CAC or other government identification smart cards, I will no longer assist you.

My use case for this reader is to use it for development of JavaCard applications, I have external USB smart card readers that are working fine, but I wanted an embedded smart card reader for convenience.

In any case thank you for your time.
