I attempted to install HP Support Assistant on my Windows computer for the first time, but the installation failed with error code -2. The installer stops before completing, and the program is not installed successfully. I have already tried restarting the system and removing any possible leftover files, but the error persists. Since this is my first installation attempt, I need guidance from HP Support on how to resolve this error and successfully install HP Support Assistant.

Hi @u-156468,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand your frustration when you have such an issue with the new device. Here’s how to resolve Error -2 and successfully install HP Support Assistant (HPSA) on your Windows device:

Step 1: Completely Uninstall Any Previous HPSA Version

  1. Open File Explorer and navigate to:
    *C:\Program Files (x86)\HP\HP Support Framework*
  2. Right-click UninstallHPSA.exe and select Run as administrator.
  3. Follow the prompts to fully remove any existing HPSA installation (even traces in hidden folders).

Step 2: Clean Up Remaining Files

  1. Press Win + R, type appwiz.cpl, and press Enter.
  2. In Programs and Features, ensure HP Support Assistant is no longer listed.
  3. Run Disk Cleanup (type cleanmgr in Start) to clear temporary files.
  4. Check Program Files (x86) and Program Files for any leftover HP Support Assistant folders, and delete them manually.

Step 3: Use the Correct Installer

  • Visit the Official HP® Support for your exact laptop model (e.g., 17-cp0097nr).
  • Download the latest HPSA installer (HP Support Assistant | HP® Support), and avoid downloading older or duplicate versions from other sources.
  • Right-click the installer → choose Run as administrator to start the installation.

Step 4: (If Needed) Disable User Account Control Temporarily

For some setups, temporarily disabling UAC can help prevent installer conflicts:

  1. Press Win + R, type regedit, and navigate to:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
  2. Double-click EnableLUA, change the Value data to 0, then restart.
  3. After installation, revert EnableLUA back to 1 and restart again.

Step 5: Reboot and Verify

  • Restart your computer after installation.
  • Open HP Support Assistant and ensure it launches correctly.
  • It should now detect your device properly and display help options.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
