On 28th August 2024, I installed the most recent update for Windows 11 (version 23H2) to my HP Envy x360 15.6 inch 2-in-1 Laptop (I got it over a year ago). After my computer installed the update and restarted, I only had 8 GB of RAM installed; my computer normally has 16 GB.
I didn't get any error messages and when I run any of the software diagnostics that could be related to Memory/RAM or performance, or check any details for my laptop; I receive no error messages and my installed RAM is still listed as 8 GB.
This has happened before, but only recently have I known for certain that the Windows update has been directly related to the problem. Each time this has happened, my RAM has returned to its base 16 GB of Memory after a few weeks to around a month. I've always just waited until it returns to normal, but since I've used my laptop more and more recently, I'd like to know if there's a fix I can do myself.
Thank you and I hope I provided enough details; I can't think of anything I didn't include. I apologize for any lack of knowledge of any basics or terminology. (Also, sorry if I posted to the wrong board; I wasn't sure)

Hi @dizzizzi,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It seems like you're experiencing a persistent issue with your HP Envy x360 15.6 inch 2-in-1 Laptop's RAM after Windows 11 updates, where the system only recognizes half of the installed RAM (8 GB instead of the full 16 GB). This could be related to a number of causes, including software glitches from the update or possibly hardware issues, though the fact that the RAM eventually returns to normal suggests it's more likely software-related. Let's work through some potential troubleshooting steps.
Steps to Fix the Issue:
Check for Physical RAM Issues:
- First, ensure that the issue isn't related to the RAM sticks physically coming loose or having a bad connection. If you're comfortable, you can try reseating the RAM by opening the laptop and reinserting the sticks. (Note: this might void warranties if not done carefully).
Verify RAM in BIOS/UEFI:
- Restart your laptop and enter the BIOS/UEFI settings (usually by pressing F2, F10, or Delete while the computer is booting). Check if the BIOS recognizes the full 16 GB of RAM. If it only shows 8 GB in the BIOS, the issue could be hardware-related.
Check RAM Allocation in Windows:
Windows System Settings:
- Right-click on the Start button → Select System → Click on Advanced system settings on the right → Under the Performance section, click Settings → In the Performance Options window, go to the Advanced tab → Under Virtual memory, click Change and see if any RAM has been allocated for paging or virtual memory.
msconfig (System Configuration) Settings:
- Press Windows + R, type msconfig, and hit Enter. Go to the Boot tab → Click on Advanced options → Ensure that the Maximum memory box is unchecked. If it’s checked, it may be limiting the amount of RAM Windows is allowed to use.
Update or Reinstall Drivers:
- Ensure your chipset and BIOS/UEFI firmware are up to date. Outdated chipset drivers or BIOS might interfere with memory management. Visit HP's official support site and download the latest drivers for your device.
- Consider reinstalling or updating the RAM controller drivers. You can do this via Device Manager:
- Press Windows + X → Select Device Manager.
- Expand System Devices → Look for the Memory controller and right-click to update the driver.
Run Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool:
- Windows has a built-in tool to check for memory issues. To use it:
- Press Windows + R, type mdsched.exe, and press Enter.
- Choose whether to restart your computer and check for problems now or check for problems the next time your computer restarts.
- This will perform a memory diagnostic check to see if any hardware issues exist with the RAM.

Rollback the Update:
- If the issue occurred directly after the Windows 11 23H2 update, you can roll back to the previous version of Windows to see if it resolves the issue.
- Go to Settings → System → Recovery → Go back (this option is only available for 10 days after the update).
Check for Future Windows Updates:
- Sometimes, Windows releases hotfixes to resolve issues like this. Ensure that you're fully updated by going to Settings → Windows Update and checking for any pending updates.
Memory Remapping Feature:
- Some motherboards have a feature called Memory Remapping that can affect how the system detects RAM. Check your BIOS settings for this feature and ensure it is enabled.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
