hp - compaq HP 15-dw1083
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

After installing a new 1 T SSD drive in the laptop it would not see the drive. Replaced the new with the old, no issues. Put in the new the laptop would not see it.

No cable or install issues. Looked in bios, it does not see the new drive. Nothing in bios allows for changes with the exception of the boot order. Which does not see the new drive. Pressed f2 and f10 looks through no listing of drive. Replace with old, works fine but not listed in bios. Upgrade bios, no change.

Ran Crucial scan. Said the SN570 was correct part and should be seen. Replaced with 2nd and 3rd new cards no change.

Any ideas on what I am missing?

Hi:

Unfortunately, HP only has the service manual for the older models on your notebook's support page.

HP 15-dw1000 Laptop PC series Manuals | HP® Customer Support

The service manual is vague in that it only specifies 'select models only' when it comes to what type drives are supported.

Some manuals are very specific as to what drives are supported based on what model processor the notebook comes with.

On notebooks with the Intel® Pentium® Gold processors such as yours, normally only SATA M.2 SSD's are supported like the 128 GB one that originally came with your notebook.

NVMe SSD's are only supported in the models that come with the Intel Core processors.

So, what I recommend you try is this if you have not done so already...

Try installing W10 on the new drive.

If W10 does not see the drive, exchange it for the 1 TB WD Blue SATA M.2 SSD and it should work just fine.

Amazon.com: Western Digital 1TB WD Blue 3D NAND Internal PC SSD - SATA III 6 Gb/s, M.2 2280, Up to 5...

Been there done that. Fails every time. And yes the only drive that works in it is the128 GB it came with.

However Western Digital and Crucial tell me it is the correct SSD drive for the laptop.

Tried installing Win 10, It did not see the drive.

The only reason I purchased this HP unit is because of it's ability to be upgraded. I currently have 64 gigs of ram running on it.

Then you will have to exchange the NVMe SSD for the SATA SSD if you want it to work.

Getting the other drive tomorrow,

If you have the existing drive installed and working, run the crystaldiskmark software and see what the first line reports (max sequential read/max sequential write).

Crystal DiskMark 8.0.4 Download (guru3d.com)

That way you can compare how much faster the WD Blue SATA SSD is to the OEM drive HP installed after you install the drive.

I know that you are disappointed that the NVMe SSD didn't work since it would have been about 5x faster than the best SATA drive out there, but you should see an improvement in the performance of the WD blue drive over the OEM drive.

Plus, you will have a lot more storage space.

You are spot on the money!

Just finished installing the OS

Thank you
