Dear HP Support Team,

I am experiencing an intermittent charging issue with my HP Pavilion laptop. The charging stops randomly, and the laptop only resumes charging when I unplug and replug the charger. This issue repeats frequently.

Here is a summary of the troubleshooting steps I’ve already taken:

  • I’ve tested the charger with different power outlets and have inspected the charger for any physical damage.
  • I ran the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics tool and checked the battery health, which reported a Normal Battery Status. The Full Charge Capacity is currently at 80%, which indicates some battery wear, but there are no significant issues in the diagnostic report.
  • I’ve updated the battery and power drivers and have uninstalled and reinstalled them to ensure proper functionality.
  • I performed a hard reset.
  • I also checked the charging port for any debris or damage, but everything appears to be in good condition.

Despite all these efforts, the charging issue persists, and the laptop intermittently stops charging.

The battery health appears to be normal, but the charging issue remains unresolved.

Could you please advise on further steps to resolve this, or let me know if this could be a hardware issue requiring repair or battery replacement?

Thank you for your assistance.

Sincerely,
Venkatesh P

Hi @Venkatesh_P1,

Welcome to the HP Support Community

I understand you've taken all the right steps in trying to troubleshoot this issue. Given that you've updated drivers, checked battery health, and run diagnostics without finding specific faults, the intermittent charging issue might indeed stem from hardware-related concerns.

May I know

1. Since when are you facing this issue

2. Have you made any changes on your PC post that this issue raised

Please try the following Troubleshoots steps.

1.    Turn off the Unit.

2.    Disconnect the AC adapter.

3.    Remove any discs from the disc drive.

4.    Remove memory cards from the card reader slot.

5.    Disconnect all nonessential peripheral devices, such as printers, scanners, external hard drives, and USB flash drives.

6.    Disconnect the AC adapter press and hold the power button for approximately 15 seconds.

7.    Reconnect the AC adapter, and then turn on the computer.

Step 2

Turn off the unit and please press and hold the Windows key + letter B key and the power button together for 30 seconds after 30 seconds, 1st release the power button but keep holding the Windows key and B key for ten more seconds and then release these two keys If done correctly, you will see the display flashing once. Please attempt it thrice as this step and Restart the unit

Step3

The unit has to be turned off, Press Win+ V while holding these two keys then Press the Power button, continue to hold all three keys for 30 seconds and then release the Power button first and then release these two keys Please attempt it thrice  and then you may get a Pop-Up CMOS Check and it will restart the unit

Even if you don't get a Pop-up restart the unit manually after 3 attempts.

Here are some additional steps and checks to consider:

  • Inspect Charger and Cable Thoroughly: Look for any signs of wear along the entire length of the charger cable, especially at both ends. Even minor damage or fraying can cause charging issues.
  • Check for Firmware Updates: Some charging issues can be resolved with firmware updates. Visit the HP Support website, enter your laptop’s model, and check for any firmware or BIOS updates that might specifically address charging or power issues.
  • Battery Calibration: While the battery shows a normal health status, calibration can sometimes help correct reporting issues related to charging. You can calibrate the battery by charging it to 100%, letting it drain to near 0%, and then charging it back up to full without interruptions. This can sometimes help realign the charging system.
  • Consider Power Mode Settings: Windows power settings or “Battery Saver” modes can sometimes impact how charging is detected or managed. Check to ensure that no unusual power-saving settings are enabled in Settings > System > Power & Battery.
  • Test with a Different Charger: If possible, try using a compatible HP charger from another device. This can help rule out any issues with your charger specifically.
