Hi!

So, I need the internal battery in my laptop replaced. Over the past two months or so, I've noticed that the battery on my laptop has been deteriorating. Its threshold to charge keeps getting lower and lower; it no longer charges to 100%, but instead to 85% then down to 75% and I know that it's going to keep decreasing. I ran a battery test on it and it confirmed that I need a new battery.

My question is, how do I go about getting the battery replaced? Who do I go to? Do I have to purchase a new battery? I would really appreciate some guidance on this because I have no idea what to do. I need my laptop for school but spring break is coming up and I want to use that free time to get my laptop fixed because it's the only time I have until the end of the semester.

Thanks in advance!

Hi JordynJ,

Unfortunately, I'm just a random computer user so I would have no idea as to when HP would have the part back in stock.

Furthermore, what battery test did you use? Was it HP UEFI Diagnostics? If you got a failure ID from HP UEFI Diagnostics and are currently covered under HP's 1 year warranty, please ignore the info below and contact HP for a free replacement battery.

Contact HP Worldwide here: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/ww-contact-us.html

Check warranty status here: https://support.hp.com/us-en/checkwarranty

If you do want status on the battery availability, it's best to call HP.

I do feel that you can replace the battery without any issues, however, if you are worried then you can opt for getting it serviced. You can purchase the battery and either go to GeekSquad or your local, trusted repair/support centre for computers. Tell them that you only need professional replacement of a battery and that you have the battery. I'm not sure if GeekSquad would actually send your computer off to a service centre just to replace the battery, but they might. Keep in mind that GeekSquad's services don't come cheap.

Hope this helps,

Hi JordynJ,

I can certainly try to help you.

The recommended option is to purchase a new battery (whether it be from HP or online resellers) and replace it yourself.

Your laptop is the HP Pavilion 14-al061nr and utilizes a 3-cell, 41 Wh Li-ion battery. This uses HP Spare Part number 849908-850. You can use this number in the HP Parts Store here or find it from online resellers like this.

Steps to replacement are located on page 33 of your computer's Maintenance and Service Guide.

Thank you so much! I appreciate you detailing the specs of my laptop for me because I surely would not have figured it out, and I appreciate you showing me where to purchase my battery!

I just have a few follow-up questions:

On the hp site, it says that the battery I need is on backorder right now, do you happen to know how long it will take for it to be back in stock?

Also, I feel like I would commit some grave error if I try to replace the battery myself. Are there laptop repair shops or anything that would be able to do it for me? Like could I take it to GeekSquad at Best Buy?

I used the Battery Check test in the HP Support Assistant program, on the results page where it tells me to replace my battery, it mentions that a replacement may be covered in my warranty. I'm still under warranty so I think I'll take your adivce and contact HP about getting the free replacement.

Also, I think you're right - I think me replacing it on my own would be much less of a hassle than trying to get a third party to do it and it would be a lot cheaper.

Thanks for everything, you were a great help!
