Hi Paul,
Thanks for the link to the Maintenance & Service Guide, very useful document indeed, despite no mention of the SD card reader part number. I've located an old part functioning nw8240 on eBay and just awaiting seller's response to see if he'll break it for spares and sell the card reader separately.
Have a great day.

You're very welcome, George.
I hope he will do that for you,
Please post back and let us know if you were able to get the card reader to work.
Once again...I would be very surprised if a SD card > 4 GB will work.
I don't have any to test, as I just gave away my nc6400 to my grand daughter last night for her first laptop to learn with.
My 6910p has the Ricoh card reader, so that won't help us determine the max capacity of the TI card reader.

Hi Paul,
I decided to buy the whole nw8240, it was only £10 and there were other bits I wanted to renew. I stripped it down to get the SD card reader and it was only then that the drawings in the manual made sense. It turns out that the SmartCard reader detaches and is a separate item, but the SD card reader is an integral part of the motherboard and is soldered in to it.
That's just one step too far for me on this problem, both timewise and skillwise, so I haven't gone to the effort of unsoldering.
I thought of trying the 2Gb SD card in the spare nw8240 but it doesn't have an hdd and although it boots as far as BIOS set up I don't have the password so can't get in. It's too much faf to start bypassing the BIOS password just for this so back to my original nw8240. Can you think of anything else I can try to test the SD card reader in that by any chance?
Don't worry if you can't, I promise to give up and get my life back if you can't 🙂
Cheers and keep smiling.
George

Hi, George:
Unfortunately, I don't have any suggestions for you to try.
If the spare notebook has a BIOS P/W you can't do anthing further.
There might be a way to clear the P/W by:
Unplugging the PC. Remove the main and CMOS (RTC) batteries.
Press and hold the power button a few seconds to drain any residual current.
Plug in and turn on the PC with both batteries removed.
See if the P/W was cleared.
If not, then nothing can be done to clear the P/W.
As far as testing the card reader...I'm afraid I can't be of help with that.
Too bad it is not a removable part.

Hi Paul,
Thanks for the tip about clearing BIOS p/w with battery removal etc.
I'm now on holiday until end of November but I'll give that a final try when back home.
If it works I'll let you know and in meantime thanks again.
Cheers.
George
