HP 15 Laptop PC 15-e3000 (4X377AV)

Hi,

I just got out my laptop after not using it for a few months and found the internal SD card reader is slow to the point of being unusable.  I.e. Opening a folder in File Explorer takes about 60 seconds (and it's not just the first time opening explorer - every folder after that takes a similarly long time).  Any software that accesses files on the SD card grinds to a halt.  I thought it might be that the SD card is reaching the end of life, however, it works fine in my PC.  I then connected an old external USB 2 card reader to the laptop and the same SD card works perfectly in it.

I decided to check for driver updates.  Firstly, the internal card reader is not listed under Device Manager and so I don't see a way of checking what driver is currently installed or what make/model of card reader it is.  I went to the HP Support site and it has two drivers listed: Alcor and Realtek.  How would I know which one is right?  I tried looking up the specifications of the motherboard (HP 89FC) and it suggests the card reader is HP.  So I'm confused about what card reader it is and where I would find new drivers.

I checked for BIOS updates.  There is only one update since the version I have and it only fixes a security issue, so I'm reluctant to risk further problems by installing that update, which doesn't sound it will help.

I have Windows 11 22H2 with all updates installed.

I haven't as yet had a chance to try a different card in the internal reader as I don't have a spare card to hand at present.

Thanks in advance for any advice.
