Internal fax modem not detected

Have spent way too much time on this problem.  Win Fax & Scan is not detecting the fax. Control Panel says Microsoft fax in the root print queue "is working properly."  So changed original FXST30.dll, apparently to correct 8.1 problem not recognizing external modem. This did not solve non-detection problem. So question now is: does HP Pavilion 17 even have a built-in fax modem? And if so, why does Win Fax & Scan not detect it.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

No. Normal laptops now don't have fax & modem. You can find fax & modem on older machines or on business machines. By the way, what is your Pavilion 17 ? Please use the following instructions to find out the model/product of your machine:

Thank you for solving the mystery, that my HP notebook does not have a built-in fax.

I am a fairly competent PC user (work and personal), having used computers since 1981. I am rational and logical. When Device Manager shows listing for FAX, when Control Panel displays FAX icon, when FAX properties declares "This device is working properly" ... I might be forgiven for thinking there is indeed a fax device in my computer.  Too bad HP thinks I should also be a mind reader--or PC equivalent of "mind."
