HP Notebook - 17-by1955cl
Microsoft Windows 11

I just noticed how hot my lap had gotten after working on my laptop for about an hour. I searched Google and found several recommendations for the SpeedFan app. I went ahead and installed it and opened it for it to show me nothing. When I click on "Fans" nothing shows up. (See attached image) I swore I wasn't having issues with it until recently but TBH, I can't remember the last time I heard it. Is there any other way of checking to see if it's even connected besides opening it up? I'd like to avoid doing that if at all possible!

Hi:

Go into the BIOS and enable the 'Fan always on when on A/C power' setting.

If the fan does not work with that setting enabled, then there is most likely a problem.

If the fan does work on A/C power, and your notebook is not producing a 90B system fan error at startup when on battery, then there probably is not a problem with the fan.

Strange thing happened this morning. When I turned my laptop on, I could hear the fan spin up and remained at a steady idle for a few minutes. Then it dropped down a bit and as far as I can tell, it's still running. Every 20 to 30 minutes I lift my laptop up and put my ear to the air outlet and I can hear it running. I tried running the SpeedFan app again but I'm still not seeing anything. I'm hoping it's just that I don't know how to use the app correctly. But I will definitely jump into the BIOS and check the fan settings as you suggested. I'll be sure to come back and give you an update. I really appreciate you taking the time to post your suggestion and taking the time to help me out!

You're very welcome.

That Speedfan app only works on some models and may not have support for your notebook's chipset and motherboard sensors, so I'm not overly surprised it isn't working on yours.

That app has been around since around the turn of the century, and was very effective to monitor the fan speeds and whatnot on much older PC's than yours.

What you can do is to install the free HWINFO app which will give you temperatures of your processor, drive, etc.

That is a great utility that provides oodles of information regarding your notebook's hardware.

I use the 64 bit portable version.
