i have the hp pavilion gaming 15 ec2xxx with 8 gigs of ram, im trying to upgrade to 16 gigs so im trying to find out if this laptop uses 1x8 or 2x4 sticks

If you run the utility CPU-Z found here- https://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html  click on the SPD tab like shown in the pic, there is a selector for the different slots, Slot #1 or Slot #2. It shows the make, model and speed of whatever memory you have installed.

The best practice is to replace the existing memory module with either a single 16 GB soDIMM module of guaranteed compatible memory or a pair of identical guaranteed compatible memory modules.

 

If you use a utility named HWINFO you can see how many ranks the module has.

CPU-z which will also be part of the HWINFO utility suite will not.
