HP Envy 15
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

I am not sure if the operating system is 32 or 64 bit, but i am definitely windows 10.

I got a message to apply the latest windows 10 update, so i applied it, and when it was finished i got the message "AccelerometerST.exe - system error" - file VCRUNTIME140.dll was not found.

I Checked on the website and followed a post that stated, uninstall HP 3D DriveGuard, restart notebook and then reinstall DriveGuard from http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/ap78001-78500/sp78033.exe

All went well, this got rid of the message. However, i was away from my notebook for a while and now when i switch it on windows 10 starts up, but there is no user/password box for me to log on with.

I dare not use my laptop for fear i have been scammed. Could someone please let me know if this is a scam or if it is legit?

and what do i need to do next to get safely logged into my notebook.

Few questions so I can understand your problem.

So, you set a password for your PC, then when you upgrade your OS it vanished?  Where did you get that message -that tells you to update to Win 10- from?

BTW, if you want to know what OS are you running (32 or 64), go to ThisPC/ThisComputer/MyComputer  > Computer tap on the top of the page > system info.

My antivirus software, bullguard, stated that a windows update 1703 was missing, so my pc was vulnerable. The next time i switched my pc on it said to install the update, so this is what i did.

I just didn't know if sp78033.exe was legit? as after i had run it i couldn't logon to my pc and the password box wasn't visible.

I have spoken to a couple of people since and this seems to be a feature of windows occasionally and nothing specifically to do with the update. I had to do Ctrl+Alt+Del and Backtab several times in various combinations and the password box now appears. So i can now logon to my notepad.

Hi @kal4,

Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues with help from the community! I came across your post and wanted to assist you. I understand you are having issues with your HP notebook stuck while turning on the PC. Don't worry as I have a few suggestions which should help you resolve this issue.

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

Have you tried to boot into Safe mode and remove the check from Safe boot?

In the meantime, let's try these steps here:

Perform a Hard reset on the notebook: A power reset (or hard restart) clears all information from the computer's memory without erasing any personal data. Performing a power reset might fix conditions such as Windows not responding, a blank display, software freezing, keyboard stops responding, or other external devices locking up.

Next thing, I would suggest here is to Press the power button to restart the PC and start tapping Esc key continuously until you see the Startup Menu - On the Startup Menu - Press the F10 key to enter into Recovery mode - If prompted, select your keyboard layout, then from the Choose an option screen, click Troubleshoot - Click Advanced options - Startup Settings > Restart. Choose the safe mode option you want from the Startup Settings menu:

Press the Windows + R - Type in msconfig - On the top click on Boot - Remove the check box next to Safe boot. Click on Apply and OK. Restart the PC and now check if you get the password prompt.
