Everything I can see as far as form factor, connector type etc all says that this drive should work. It passes the smart test etc but when it comes time to install anything it isn’t recognized. Is this just another lovely HP feature where you have to buy a drive from them? Of course support couldn’t tell me anything at all, so we are left to help ourselves. I swear I get more and more angry every day. Anyone ever see the movie “Falling Down” with Michael Douglas?

Hi:

See this discussion at the link below for the solution to your dilemma.

You can use the same driver I posted in the discussion.

Solved: Win 10 install not recognizing the NVME - HP Support Community - 8510047

BTW, since your notebook's NVMe SSD slot is only PCIe Gen 3.0, the WD Black PCie 4 x 4 will not run at its maximum advertised read/write speeds.

You'll probably get somewhere around 3,500 MBPS out of it.

This is exactly what I came back here to say. I got it sorted and am now getting ready to install a  fresh set of Win11 and Ubuntu. I made the mistake of trying microsuck support late last night and the guy was as useless as our government. Well, for that matter so is hp support. That **bleep** assistant is good at one thing. Frustrating me. Well two, that and talking in circles followed by a crash and reset. Record profits and toilet service. Gotta love it. Anyway, thank you kindly for reaching out and helping. I’ll finally be able to work in a couple of hours or so.
Have a good day! ✌️

kind regards,

Re the speed discrepancies that’s not really a bother. I’m old enough to remember a time before MB hard drives. I think I’ll get by (begrudgingly) at 3500mbs. I’ve benchmarked it and it does  indeed pin out at 3500.
be well John Spartan and thank you again.

You're very welcome, Mike.

What frustrates me is that Microsoft has taken zero steps to incorporate those storage controller drivers into their W10/W11 installation files and they have had at least 3 years to do this.

Surely, those drivers could have been added to the Windows 10/11 22H2 installation files by now.

Folks are returning drives etc., convinced that there is an issue with them.

Doesn't matter what kind...SATA, NVMe.  Windows won't install on any Intel 11th, 12th or 13th gen core processor platforms without those storage controller drivers.

We are going backwards like we used to have to do when we installed XP on PC's that had the 'new fangled' SATA AHCI controllers.

You can always move the Gen 4 SSD to a newer PC in the future, and like you wrote, it is way better than SATA.

You have a great day too!

Cheers,

Paul

Paul,

I laid into the script reader at MS last night. He basically just pasted script pages to me after I told him the steps I’d taken. Long story short , when I found the article in the MS knowledge base, I lit that guy up. I straight told him that he is useless as a support specialist. If he was any good he’d have known immediately about this years old issue and simply sent me the link. I roasted him then I gave him the solution to save the next person the hypertension. Anyway, I’m being prompted. Back to it. Have a gold one.
best,

Mike
