Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi, I have an issue with my laptop, Compaq CQ58. It started with a whistling sound coming and going during my use. Normally, I use the adapter only without a battery. Until yesterday, I had it on, but it did not turn on. The on light came on for one second, and the laptop did not take off.

I used to put on the battery and the PC took off normally, but I still heard the whistling come and go, I took the battery out and the PC continued working but with the same whistling noise. I off the PC and tried to start it again, but I had the same issue, it did not start before I connected the battery, after starting, I could take the battery out and the PC continued working.

I read online about this issue and I saw a method saying that I need to take the adapter and the battery out hold on the button for 15 seconds and start again, I do that and it was a success the 1st time, but after I off the PC and tried to start again, the PC back to not take off without battery, I tried the same method again, but it did not work anymore.

appreciate any idea

Hi @Raabitco

Welcome to the HP support community.

I understand you're experiencing an issue with your HP device, and I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. I'm here to help you today.

It sounds like you’re dealing with a tricky situation with your Compaq CQ58, lets try some basic steps first. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue further:

1. Inspect the Power Adapter:

  • Check for Damage: Look for any visible damage to the power adapter or cable.
  • Try a Different Outlet: Sometimes, the issue could be with the outlet. Try plugging it into a different one.

2. Test Without the Battery:

  • Remove the Battery and Adapter: With both removed, hold the power button for about 15-20 seconds to discharge any residual power.
  • Connect Only the Adapter: After that, reconnect only the power adapter (without the battery) and see if the laptop powers on.

3. Reinstall the Battery:

  • If the laptop works with the adapter but not without the battery, reinstall the battery and try again. It’s possible that the battery is affecting the power management.

4. Check for Overheating:

  • If you hear a whistling noise, it could be related to a cooling fan or another component overheating. Make sure the vents are clear and not blocked by dust or debris.
  • Consider cleaning the vents and fans if you're comfortable doing so.

5. Run Hardware Diagnostics:

  • If you can get the laptop to power on, run any built-in hardware diagnostics (often accessible by pressing F2 or Esc during boot) to check for hardware issues.

6. Consider the Whistling Noise:

  • If the whistling noise continues, it might indicate a hardware issue, possibly with the fan or another component. If you’re comfortable, listen closely to pinpoint where it’s coming from.

I hope this helps! Keep me posted.
