Hi There,
I’ve a new Laptop HP ENVY x360 Convertible 15-bq2xx which came with a 256GB M.2 Hard drive, its awesome but I wanted to upgrade for more space. So after my research I found it has additional compartment for a 2.5Inch hard drive and the connection port, however company didn’t provide any accessories to upgrade it.
So I brought a 2.5” SSD, hard drive bracket and caddy cable according to the product service manual. However both of the arts are not HP OEM. I got them from Aliexpress but its description says it should work with my model.
Now after installing it with the 2.5” SSD almost nothing happened, the bios and the system doesn’t recognize it. I formatted it with GPT partition as an external drive but still nothing. I changed all setting in bios like disabling secure boot, legacy support etc but still same. As it’s a SSD I couldn’t feel its running or not but later I put a mechanical HD and I saw the HD was running and each time the system boot its giving an error Hard Drive 2 Error (3F2) and press F2 to system diagnose, but while diagnosed I tried quick to extensive test but its still doesn’t recognize the HD2. And while touching the HD its was running.
And yes both the HD are absolutely fine and works well as an external HD.
So can anyone help what is the issue might be?

You can upgrade the existing Hard drive but as per the Service Guide you might not be able to use SSD Hard drive but you can definitely upgrade the SATA Hard drive

As per the Maintenance & Service Guides: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c06172053 for the HP ENVY x360 15 Convertible Notebooks, only the Model Numbers 15m-bq1xx and 15-bq1xx series support SSD Hard drives
It is recommended to use only HP certified Parts since HP cannot guarantee the functionality or performance of 3rd party Hardware
Thank you 😊

Hi There,
Thank you very much for your feedback. So you mean this laptop wont support additional HDD even with proper accessories or HDD cable?
But the manual also says this

I have a question. i've done the same thing as the OP but my hard drive is not being recognized even though the bios recognizes it. do any drivers or anything like that need to be loaded after installing a new HDD that is non SSD and is recognized?

@EastBayRob
What I'm guessing if that is your issue then this might help. If its a brand new hard disk and not installed in other PCs and not formatted and if its really recognized by the Bios then after login in windows you have to go to disk manager and you need to check if its over there as HD 2 or 1 (if the existing HD is 0 then the new one will be 1) if its there then the system recognizing it perfectly and just after opening the disk manager you will get a popup to choose a Parting option either MBR or GPT, after formatting it in your preferred selection, the drive will show in my computer, without formatting it in MBR or GPT it wont show in my computer as a drive.

Yes, i finally figured that out. it has been many years since i've built my last PC so i had forgot the steps for a brand new fresh hard drive. Thanks for the reply! i need to figure out how to mark as helpful or solved so all i could do was give a thumbs up.

No issues, I'm glad it helped you.
BTW do you have the same Envy model? if so where did you got the sata cable? I was trying since last 1 year but couldnt mound the HDD, later had to upgrade to a 1TB NVMe SSD

Hi there, i think i do. I just googled hp envy x360 convertible 15-bq2xx service manual and take a look at the second service manual that comes up. after the table of contents it will tell you what models the manual applies to. down in the section for replacing the hard drive are the part numbers needed. here is the link: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c06172053.pdf
here are the part numbers i ordered as my laptop did not have a current hard drive and only the M2 slot drive.
