I just purchased an HP - 17t Laptop and added the customization to have two drives: 1 TB 5400 rpm SATA; 256 GB M.2 SSD. I was wondering if anyone can confirm that they will install windows on the 256 SSD over the 1TB HDD?

Hi! @Shawn1179, Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues with help from the community!
I understand you would like to install the OS on an M.2 SSD on your laptop.
Don't worry I'll try to help you out.
Did you make any software or hardware changes on your PC?
Please share the product number of your laptop to assist you better.
Excellent description and a great diagnosis done. It is greatly appreciated.
If you have to install the operating system on the M.2 SSD you have to change the boot priority to M.2 in BIOS.
You need to make sure the SATA interface mode is set to AHCI in BIOS.
And in the boot section of the bios if any M.2 is listed, set it to number 2.
Or a bootable PCI-e device.
Also, You can refer the video instructions from a third party to know more information about installing the OS on an M.2 drive. Click Here
Refer the specification page of your PC for more information. Click Here
Also, upgrading the parts on your PC will not void the warranty. However, if there are any physical damages caused during the part replacement it will not be covered under warranty.
You can purchase the part from HP parts store using this link.
Hope this answers your query!

Sorry I think I may have worded the question weirdly. I don't have the laptop yet I just changed some of the options when ordering it. I selected the option to have an HDD and an SSD and wanted to know which drive the operating system will be on.

@Shawn1179, thanks for your prompt response and time.
I appreciate your efforts for writing back to us.
As you needed to know on what drive the operating system would be installed.
The operating system will be installed on the primary SATA hard drive. You can use the SSD to store the files and documents.
Hope this answers your query!
Take Care! 🙂
