Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Have a HP 240 mouse. Regularly (at least once a week) on switch on I get a message "New Bluetooth mouse found".

There's then a wait while everything gets set up, then it all works OK

When I look at the Bluetooth items on the Laptop sometimes an extra mouse has appeared in the list, but more often there is no change.

Anyone got any ideas, also, why can't I ADD the mouse to "My Items" on this site, it doesn't appear in the choices offered?

Finally has anyone found he battery consumption is high

Hi @dougjbarnes,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The issue you're experiencing with the repeated "New Bluetooth mouse found" message and high battery consumption on your HP 240 mouse may stem from one or a combination of the following causes.

Bluetooth Pairing Instability

  • Potential Cause: The connection between your HP 240 mouse and your laptop may not be stable, causing the system to treat the device as "new" each time it reconnects.
  • Solution:
    • Re-pair the Mouse:
      1. Go to Settings > Bluetooth & Devices.
      2. Remove the mouse from the paired devices list.
      3. Put the mouse in pairing mode and re-pair it.
    • Ensure the Correct Driver is Installed:
      • Check the HP website for updated Bluetooth mouse drivers.
      • Update the Bluetooth drivers on your laptop (Device Manager > Bluetooth > Update Drivers).

Duplicate Device Entries

  • Potential Cause: The system might be creating duplicate profiles for your mouse, possibly due to intermittent disconnections or multiple attempts to pair the device.
  • Solution:
    • Remove all duplicate mouse entries in the Bluetooth settings.
    • Restart the laptop and ensure only one instance of the HP 240 mouse appears.

Power Management Settings

  • Potential Cause: Aggressive power-saving settings for Bluetooth may disconnect the mouse frequently, prompting the system to reinitialize the device.
  • Solution:
    1. Open Device Manager.
    2. Expand the Bluetooth section.
    3. Right-click on your Bluetooth adapter and select Properties.
    4. Go to the Power Management tab and uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.

High Battery Consumption

  • Potential Cause: Continuous re-pairing and usage of advanced Bluetooth features (e.g., polling rate) could drain the mouse's battery faster.
  • Solution:
    • Use high-quality batteries designed for electronic devices.
    • Turn the mouse off when not in use.
    • If the mouse supports power-saving features, ensure they are enabled.

Device Addition to "My Items"

  • Potential Cause: HP's system may not yet list the HP 240 mouse as a selectable item for registration.
  • Solution:
    • Manual Addition: If the option exists, try adding the mouse by entering the product's serial number on the HP Support site.

Note:

  • If the problem persists, consider updating your laptop's BIOS and Bluetooth firmware as they may include fixes for connectivity stability.
  • Check if interference from other Bluetooth devices in the area is causing instability.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
