Hi. SInce I have upgraded my laptop to the October update WIndows 10, my keyboard backlight is not working. When I switch it on, it is either extremely dim or just does not work. Occasionally the backlight will flash for a second on its own and then go off again.

Please provide specific solutions and not generic solutions like reinstalling drivers etc. I have tried all of that.

@ss_areeb_h,

Welcome to the HP Forums 🙂 I would like to take a moment and thank you for using this forum, it is a great place to find answers. For you to have the best experience on the HP forum, you could also visit our HP Forums Guide for First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More. I see from your post that you are having concern with keyboard backlighting on your HP Pavilion notebook. No worries, I'll be glad to help you.

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

Have you recently made any software or hardware changes on the PC before the issue started?

Have you tried to update the drivers either using Windows update or using HP Support Assistant.

Did you try to update the Bios?

In the meantime, let's try these steps here:

If you're not sure, please go through the support document for - HP Notebook PCs - Turning a Backlit Keyboard On or Off

In case if the keyboard backlight stopped working, I would suggest here is to Run Windows Updates troubleshooter -

Download and install the troubleshooter from this link.

Now try to perform Windows Updates -

1) In the search box, type and open Windows Updates.
2) Check for updates.
3) If the updates are available, click on install and restart the computer.

If the issue still persists, I would suggest here is to update the Bios on your computer from  HP Support Assistant Updates -

1) In the search box, type and open HP Support Assistant.
2) Check for updates.
3) If the updates are available, click on install and restart the computer.

Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance!

Eagerly waiting for your response!

that said, If the information I've provided was helpful,

give us some reinforcement by clicking the solution and kudos buttons,

that'll help us and others see that we've got the answers!

Good Luck.

Hi,

As I said, I have tried all the general fixes for the problem.

Windows Update: I have ran windows update twice and have installed all the updates available already. The check for updates now does not show any new updates.

BIOS Update: I have also searched the HP Support Assistant for BIOS update and it was not needed.

Driver updates: I have already tried to update keyboard and chipset drivers. I have also uninstalled and reinstalled the keyboard drivers but am still facing the issue.

Now, my hard drive was recently corrupted and I had given my laptop to the HP service centre for replacement (it was still under warrantee). I did not face the issue when I received the laptop back, but a few days later. I believe this issue started after installing the Windows 10 October Update as HP is known to have a keyboard driver issue with that update that led to BSOD errors in many PC (I have already faced such an error on my HP desktop PC in my office).

Once again let me describe the the problem. When I switch on the backlight, sometimes it does not turn on and sometimes it turns on but is extremely dim. Occasionally while I am using the laptop, the backlight will turn bright for a second (like a flash) and then turn off again. This happens randomly and does not happen again when I try reciprocating my actions.

@ss_areeb_h,

It's great to have you back and your patience is greatly appreciated.

After reviewing your post thoroughly, I understand you have followed the steps suggested and unfortunately nothing has helped to resolve this issue.

In this scenario, I would suspect this could be a possible hardware failure. I would recommend you contact our HP phone support for further assistance.

HP phone support can be reached by following the link: www.hp.com/contacthp

I'm sure they should be able to go ahead and provide you with all the service options available.

Let me know if you need any further assistance. I'll be more than happy to help you.

Take care now and do have a fabulous week ahead. 🙂
Regards,
