Hello.
My boyfriend bought me this laptop for Christmas. My old HP pavillon has a backlit keyboard that lights up by pressing the F5 key. On this model laptop, there is nothing indicated on the F5 key to suggest a light up keyboard. I am a student and I really need the light up keyboard function....it is so important to me. Does this laptop have a backlit keyboard? If it doesn't, is there anyway I can send it to a shop and have them install one? Or do i have to ask him to return this gift? Thank you.

Hi @HannahSolo,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I can provide some general advice on how to determine if your HP Pavilion laptop has a backlit keyboard.
Here are a few steps you can take.
- Check the Laptop's User Manual: The user manual that came with your laptop should provide information about its features, including whether or not it has a backlit keyboard. You can often find the manual on the HP website if you don't have a physical copy.
- Inspect the Keyboard: While you mentioned there is no indication on the F5 key, sometimes the keyboard keys themselves may have symbols or icons that are backlit. Look closely at the F5 key or the area around it to see if there are any symbols that suggest a backlit keyboard.
- Check Laptop Settings: On some laptops, the backlit keyboard can be controlled through software settings. You can check the laptop's settings or control panel to see if there's an option to enable or adjust the keyboard backlight.
Remember that not all laptops come with a backlit keyboard, even within the same model series. It's also possible that the keyboard backlight feature is not explicitly labeled on the key. If your laptop doesn't have a backlit keyboard, you might consider using an external USB-powered LED light for typing in low-light conditions.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Here is the Manual:
On your model HP sold it with and without backlit keyboard. Page 11 shows where the key is to activate the backlight, on models that have one. Trying to retrofit a backlit keyboard would be theoretically possible but very expensive. Would require replacement of the top cover including keyboard and the cooling fan of the laptop. If you determine it has no backlight, backlight is critical to you and it can still be returned for a refund you should do so.

If you do not see the icon that I pointed out, it means no backlit keyboard.
