HP DV9500 running Win 7 Ultimate with up to date drivers and as many Win7 updates as are available

Laptop rarely used but dug out for a project

All works fine apart from keyboard where pressing a key may produce 0, 1 or 2 characters. For example

a produces aq

b,c work normally

d produces de

e produced de

x and v work fine (as does ctrl-x,v,c which is just as well!)

and do on

Backspace does nothing

Then some other odd results

AltGr+a produces á (only 1 character) whereas a produces aq

Ins (Keypad) prodces .0 or nothing depending on numlock

numlock produces # but seems also to function as numlock

9 produces 9 but 9 on the keypad can produce 9+ or just + depending on whether numlock has been pressed

Running in safe mode does the same

the on-screen keyboard works fine

Changing character repeat delay make no difference

Control Panel->Keyboard says standard 101/102 Key or MS Natural PS/2 witgh HP QLB

I cant beleive its a physical problem wiht the keyboard - seems the wrong sort of errors.

So I'd have to guess the table that translates keyboad codes into characters is corrupt but I didn't think it could translate 1 input to 2 output characters and anyway I have no idea where to find it, repleace it or even look at what it is doing

Suggestions welcome

Check to ensure that the keyboard type matches the display language.

That is an old laptop at 15 years since it was introduced to the market.

I am not surprised that it has issues.

Is that the original Windowes 7 installation?

Had you considered connecting a USB keyboard to see if the result is the same?

Yup - seriously old but the 17" screen is great for video (even if the priocessor cant cope with H265 😞 )
No idea of W7 was original as I bought it 2nd hand btui its woprked fine for many years then went into store. Came out and now misbehaves.
USB keyboard seems to work OK - it too is a bit old but the keys either work properly or dont work at all (same as on a more modern laptop)

Keyboard is the standard UK keyboard 41541-031.
Keyboard language is UK

If you plug a USB keyboard for troubleshooting, you will be able to isolate the issue by seeing if it is a hardware problem or not.

Yes, of course. But if I dont have a USB keyboard . . ?

That is when you might consider asking a nice neighbor or friend if they have one you can use for a few minutes.
