HP ENVY 17.3 inch Laptop PC 17-cr0000 IDS Base Model
Microsoft Windows 11

A few times now the keyboard has just stopped working. All keys are unresponsive.  If I plug in another keyboard it works, but the built in keyboard stops working. If I hold down the power button for a long time and let it reboot it comes back.  But I lose my work, and that is bad.  The issue is very intermittent.  I found other help articles that say to hold down and reboot.  But that is hardly a decent "fix".

I need to know what a true fix is.  Do I need a new keyboard?  New driver?  It can't really be a cable or any hardware because just a reboot fixes it.  I have two of these machines and only one of them does it.

If it helps in analysis, the screen also twitches and acts wonky every so often.  Perhaps they are related.

Hi @no1bitwdlr,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It seems like you're experiencing an issue with your HP ENVY laptop's keyboard, and there might be some connection with screen behavior. Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:

Uninstall and reinstall the drivers:

Select "Device Manager" from the pane on the left. Expand the Keyboards section, right-click on the keyboard you want to repair and choose "Uninstall." Click the Windows "Start" button and select "Restart." When your computer boots up, Windows will detect your keyboard and install the driver.

Update Keyboard Drivers:

Make sure your keyboard drivers are up to date. You can do this by going to the Device Manager, locating the keyboard, right-clicking, and selecting "Update driver."

Check for Windows Updates:

Ensure that your operating system is fully updated. Sometimes, system updates include fixes for hardware-related issues.

Run Hardware Diagnostics:

Most laptops have built-in diagnostics tools. You can run hardware diagnostics to check for any issues with the keyboard or other components.

  • Test the keyboard
  • Use HP PC Hardware Diagnostics to complete a functional test of the keyboard and identify any problems with the hardware.
  • Download the latest version of HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
  • In Windows, search for and right-click HP PC Hardware Diagnostics for Windows, and then select Run as administrator.
  • Click Component Tests > Input Devices > Keyboard Test.
  • Click Run once to begin the test.
  • The test ends when you complete the tasks or 3 minutes elapse.
  • For more information about using HP PC Hardware Diagnostics for Windows, go to HP PCs - Testing for hardware failures.

Check for Malware:

Run a full system scan for malware using a reliable antivirus program. Malware can sometimes cause erratic behavior in both hardware and software.

Perform a System Restore:

If the issue started recently, you can try restoring your system to a point before the problem occurred. This can be done through the System Restore feature in Windows.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
