Hi @Shazi75,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I understand how  it must feel when the keyboard backlight isn’t working, especially since the light switch symbol is visible on your F4 key.

Could you please share the exact model of your HP laptop?

In the meantime, here are a few steps you can try:

  • Function key combination: On many HP laptops, the keyboard light is toggled using Fn + F4 (sometimes just F4). Try pressing it both with and without the Fn key.
  • Check BIOS settings: Restart your laptop and enter the BIOS/UEFI setup (usually by pressing Esc or F10 during startup). Look for a setting related to “Keyboard Illumination” and ensure it’s enabled.
  • Update drivers: Open HP Support Assistant or Device Manager and check for updates to your keyboard or chipset drivers.
  • Power reset: Shut down your laptop, disconnect the power adapter, and hold the power button for about 15 seconds. Then reconnect and restart.
  • Windows settings: Some models allow control of keyboard backlight through HP Command Center or Windows Mobility Center.

If none of these steps work, it could be a hardware issue, but let’s first confirm your laptop model and whether the backlight has ever worked before.

I hope this helps.

I'm an HP Employee.
