I have an Elitebook 840G1. The keyboard only responds after pressing the keys for about 5 seconds, making it completely useless. I replaced the keyboard 11 months ago and its been working fine. After trying all the usual fixes - cleaning it, driver update, checking toggle keys, I went back to the parts shop. We tested with another keyboard and it had the exact same problem. HP support assistant software suggested I replace keyboard, but that doesn't seem to solve the issue.
I decided to Re-install windows 10, the problem is not yet resolved. A usb or wireless keyboard works just fine. If I press keyboard or numlock key on external keyboard it lights up on the laptop keyboard.
I've spent hours on the internet looking for a solution to no avail.
Is there any hope or I have to throw this away n move on?
Its super frustrating.

Sorry to hear that you are having problems ... and I would like to help you.

Updating the BIOS is recommended as standard maintenance of the computer. It can also help resolve the following issues:
- An available BIOS update resolves a specific issue or improves computer performance.
- The current BIOS does not support a hardware component or a Windows upgrade.
- HP Support recommends installing a specific BIOS update.
"
(2) Reboot
(3) Let BIOS be installed until it's completely done !

Thank you for taking time time to reply.
I did all the steps except Intel Management Engine Components Driver, which returned error system not supported.
So my issue still persist. Only the keyboard is having issues, the touchpad is ok.

Hello @Joseke

Possible defects
(1) Keyboard socket defective, which accepts the ribbon cable of keyboard.
(2) Mainboard keyboard controller defective, therefore replacing keyboard does not bring success.
(3) Repair success questionable, since mainboard problem !
Recommendations:
- Live with the error and use a USB keyboard and mouse.
- Buy a used/new notebook
