The space bar on my hp spectre 15 x360 only works when I tap it dead center.

OK.. Doesn't sound right.  The keyboard space bar may only have one sensor (I really don't know) but the sensor should engage no matter where you tap the space key.

Is the notebook case distended in the area of the lower keyboard - or on the bottom of the case (where it sits on the desk)?

If yes, the battery might be bloated.  No, the battery won't explode - but if the battery distends, things around it can stop working (like touchpad or keyboard).  IF that is the case - the case is distending due to bloated battery - the only fix is to get that battery out of the computer and replace it.

What else?

Not sure to what extent (or if) the hardware can be tested.

Do see if you can run diagnostics on that keyboard and whatever else seems like it might be related...
