Hi @RG1233,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand the Esc key and the up arrow key on your HP Pavilion 14 laptop aren't working, there are several troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the issue:

1. Perform a Hard Reset

  • Shut down your laptop completely.
  • Disconnect all external devices (USB drives, keyboard, etc.).
  • Press and hold the Power button for about 15 seconds to drain any residual power.
  • Reconnect only the power adapter, then turn the laptop on again.
  • Check if the issue persists.

2. Check for Keyboard Driver Issues

  • Open Device Manager (press Windows + X and select it).
  • Expand the "Keyboards" section.
  • Right-click on your keyboard device and choose Update driver.
  • If it’s already updated, you can try Uninstalling the driver and then rebooting. Windows will reinstall the keyboard driver automatically.

3. Check for Keyboard Settings or Accessibility Features

  • Make sure that Sticky Keys or other accessibility features aren’t interfering.
  • Go to Settings > Ease of Access > Keyboard, and ensure features like Sticky Keys or Filter Keys are turned off.

4. Test in Safe Mode

  • Restart your laptop and press F8 or Shift + F8 (depending on the system) before Windows loads to enter Safe Mode.
  • Check if the keys work in Safe Mode. If they do, a third-party software might be causing the issue.

5. Check for Hardware Damage or Dirt

  • Inspect the keys for any visible dirt, dust, or debris that could be affecting the connection.
  • You can try gently cleaning around the affected keys using compressed air or a soft brush.

6. Use On-Screen Keyboard for Testing

  • If the physical keyboard still isn’t working, you can use the On-Screen Keyboard to check if your system is detecting the keypresses.
  • Go to Settings > Ease of Access > Keyboard and turn on the On-Screen Keyboard.

7. Update BIOS and Drivers

  • Check if there are any updates available for your laptop’s BIOS and keyboard drivers from the HP support website.
  • Updating BIOS can sometimes resolve keyboard-related issues.

8. Test an External Keyboard

  • If possible, try connecting an external USB keyboard to your laptop to verify if it works properly. This will help determine if the problem is with the hardware of the laptop’s internal keyboard.

9. Check for Software Conflicts

  • If you recently installed any software, especially keyboard or utility apps, they might interfere with the keyboard’s function. Try uninstalling any recent software and check if the issue is resolved.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
