My laptop has two problems. Firstly, the CPU fan no longer starts reliably, resulting in considerably reduced performance. I'm assuming the fan replacement is a no-brainer and Best Buy is nearby. However, there appears to be a serious problem with the CPU, or system chipset.
In short, I have code that should work, according to the architecture specification regarding the TSO (total store order) and locked atomic machine instructions. I have an open thread at the AMD Server Guru Dev Forum: Memory corruption.
The link points to a detailed (but not conclusive) problem description with some code used to trigger the issue.
TLDR: I've implemented a fairly standard ticket-spinlock algorithm to protect shared resources. The CPU is violating architecture guarantees leading to a loss of data. This has not yet been independently verified. I have code that reliably reproduces the problem on my machine.
The warranty on the laptop is nearing expiry, so I'd like to get some official acknowledgement about this issue before the warranty expires as I realize it may take some time for HP to officially recognize the problem.
