Hi,

I'm trying to help my sister with her laptop. It was unused for about 2 weeks and when we start it up now it ves a battery error 601 on black screen. Enter option proceeds to load windows. However it keeps giving a single beep every few minutes.

I have tried reseating the battery but no use.

The battery charging indicator lights up orange (charging) for about 5 seconds and then goes white (charged) b the error persists.

If I remove the battery it runs just fine on the adapter power.

Battery Check:

I tried running Battery Check from HP support assistant. It gives the screen where the battery fills up and down etc to show it's checking ut the non the next screen it doesn't show any results at all. Just a 0% discharging. On screenshots I've seen that this is where the results should show up but I am getting nothing.

I also tried running Battery Check at startup (Esc--->F2 screen). This just stays stuck at 1% forever until I shut the laptop down.

So my questions is:

Has the battery actually failed?

or

Am I missing some hardware/driver/bios update?

I did a check for driver updates on HP website and it says 'Detection Successful but you don't need any new drivers at this time"

However if I scroll down it does show some updates?

Can the battery be giving issues because of bios being out of date?

I don't mind getting a new battery but I don't want to waste money on it if it turns out to be a different issue. HP's Battery Check not showing me any results is causing confusion.

Please advice how to proceed.

Go here- Driver Page , Click on All Drivers button, download the Bios file, execute it from your desktop or downloads folder, and let it work. Do not shut the machine off, even if it reboots itself. It's an automated installer and very low risk.

As far as the battery, if it matches your part number and looks the same, it should work fine.

Any laptop battery that old is way past the end of life. All indications point to a failed battery. It wouldn't hurt to update the bios in any case. Problem is you probably can't find a new HP replacement part that is as good as what it came with. Probably the only option is to buy a generic battery that may or may not give you decent service. But they are cheap enough.

I found this on my local Amazon: https://www.amazon.in/HP-Battery-Notebook-14-AC000NE-15-AC115NE/dp/B07F7Z41Z5/ref=sr_1_7?keywords=hp...

Under compatible with it lists HSTNN-LB6V which is same as my battery so it should work I think?

Just want to be sure on the update part. Is updating the bios hard? Does it need making backup disks and stuff? Also why does the HP website say no updates needed but lists them?
