HP Pavilion - 15-cw1507sa

My laptop fan will not switch off from full RPM when turned on. It's noisy, annoying & a drain on the battery.

The things that I've already done to try resolve this are as follows.

Updated the BIOS,

Updated the drivers.

Tried changing the power settings,

Disabled in the BIOS "fan always on".

Taken the laptop apart and cleaned the fan, grills & veins to ensure no excessive dirt or dust is present.

Removed the battery to try reset it.

The computer is running at a good temp with not much processes going on at idle. Not sure what else to do. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

It's also worth noting the screen smashed recently and i done a screen replacement. I couldn't tell you if the noise was present before the screen replacement.

Hi @Ricky107,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you've already taken several troubleshooting steps to address the noisy fan issue on your HP Pavilion laptop. Since you've already tried many common solutions, there are a few more things you can consider.

  • Check for Hardware Issues: Sometimes, the fan itself may be faulty or damaged. If you have access to another compatible fan, you could try swapping it out to see if the problem persists.
  • Monitor System Temperature: Install software to monitor your laptop's temperature, such as HWMonitor or SpeedFan. This will allow you to see if the fan is responding to actual temperature changes or if there might be a sensor issue.
  • Check for Software Conflicts: Certain software or background processes could be causing the fan to run at full speed. Use Task Manager to monitor CPU and memory usage and look for any unusually high usage that might be triggering the fan.
  • Reset BIOS Settings: Sometimes, resetting the BIOS to default settings can resolve unexpected hardware behavior. Make sure to save any custom settings before resetting.
  • Check for Loose Connections: While you had the laptop apart for cleaning and battery removal, ensure that all connections are secure, including the fan connector. A loose connection could cause the fan to malfunction.

Regarding the screen replacement, it's possible that the noise was present before, but since you've noticed it now, it might be worth rechecking any components near the screen to ensure they're properly seated and not interfering with the fan or causing vibrations that amplify the noise.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Good morning and thanks for the reply.

So going through your suggestions.

  • Check for Hardware Issues: Unfortunately i dont have a spare and with the fan running on full i was thinking it was more an issue with the CPU setting the fan to full speed? Does the fan itself have a temperature sensor within it? I would imagine it would just accept variable amounts of voltage to determine the speed of it?
  • Monitor System Temperature: I've done this and the CPU is running at ideal temp at idle, the fan it running on full right at boot up and even within the BIOS menus
  • Check for Software Conflicts: Checked and no conflicts
  • Reset BIOS Settings: I've not only reset the BIOS i've also reinstalled windows completely wiping everything off the computer and it hasn't solved it.
  • Check for Loose Connections: I've checked this and all seems good.

A further question is do you know the location of the cooling management system on the CPU? it would be good to inspect that and make sure there is no visible issues with the system controlling the fan.

Again thanks for the time you're taking to help out.

Ricky.
