New laptop. I was expecting PgUp and PgDn keys on the top row above the numeric keypad but it has calculator and power buttons instead. How do I convert those to PgUp and PgDn keys?

I used Microsoft Keyboard Manager to remap the Calculator button to PgUp, but it wouldn't let me map the Power button to PgDn. Any idea how to do that? And if I do that, will I lose the ability to turn the laptop on and off from a button or can I map it to another button?

Or do I need to return the laptop to get another one that has the expected PgUp and PgDn keys? Or can I buy an external device to have the power key to allow me to map the current power key that's normally the PgDn key? Thanks.

Talked to support. They weren't able to fix the problem with the Power Key being located where the PgDn key should be so I need to return it.

They were courteous to give me a FedEx label to return it for free. I'll need to find another laptop with the proper keyboard layout. Any suggestions would be welcome. Thanks.

Hi @LukeVA,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

You're using an HP 17 Laptop PC 17-cp3000 (9Q8Z1AV) and want to remap the Calculator and Power buttons to PgUp and PgDn, but you're running into limitations, especially with the Power button.

Here’s a breakdown of what’s possible and what’s not:

Remapping the Calculator Button

You’ve already successfully remapped the Calculator button to PgUp using Microsoft PowerToys Keyboard Manager, great!

Remapping the Power Button

Unfortunately, you cannot remap the Power button to PgDn or any other key using standard tools like PowerToys or SharpKeys. Here's why:

  • The Power button is hardwired at the BIOS/firmware level.
  • It’s designed to function independently of the operating system, so it can always turn the laptop on/off even if Windows isn’t running
  • Remapping it would disable its core function, and there’s no way to assign power-on functionality to another key.

Workarounds

Option 1: External Keyboard with PgUp/PgDn

  • Use a compact external keyboard that includes dedicated PgUp/PgDn keys.
  • This avoids remapping and gives you full functionality.

Option 2: External Power Button via Docking Station

Some HP-compatible Thunderbolt or USB-C docking stations come with a dedicated power button:

  • You can use the dock’s power button to turn on the laptop.
  • This frees up the laptop’s built-in power button for remapping (if ever possible via firmware updates).

Note: Compatibility depends on your laptop supporting USB-C Power Delivery and Wake-on-Dock features.

IF you still have an issue, help me with the Full Keyboard image so we can try to find more help.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Thanks for your detailed feedback. It's disappointing that HP replaced the PgUp key with the power button that can't be remapped. That essentially makes the laptop unusable for how I use Excel with the numeric keypad.

Does HP offer another laptop with a numeric keyboard that has the buttons across the top for the traditional Home, End, PgUp, PgDn configuration? I'd like to return/exchange this laptop and get that instead.

Sorry, my laptop is this: HP OmniBook 7 17.3 inch Laptop Next Gen AI PC 17-dc0000 IDS Base Model

Not sure if that makes any difference.

Hi @LukeVA,

Thank you for your update. I’m sorry to hear the keyboard layout on your device did not meet your needs, but I’m glad to know that HP Support was able to assist with a return label for you.

Since keyboard layouts can vary by region and model, if you’re looking for a replacement laptop, we recommend reviewing the specifications and keyboard layout images on the HP Store before purchase, or checking the device in person at an authorized retailer. This will help ensure the layout matches your preferences (for example, key placement for Power, PgDn, or Home/End functions).

If you’d like, you can share what features you’re looking for in your next laptop (such as screen size, performance needs, or budget), and the Community will be happy to suggest suitable HP models that may be a better fit.

Let me know

Take care and have an amazing day!

Thanks for your help. I marked my message about returning the product as the Accepted Solution since HP didn't offer a solution with this model. I was hoping someone would offer an alternative laptop in this thread. I guess this laptop is the most advanced version so this will be the future of HP, right?

The pictures of the models on the HP website don't show the keyboard layouts. Even if I saw a picture of the keyboard, I probably wouldn't have noticed that HP decided to replace an existing button with the power button. Did that save a few dollars?

I probably have to go back to laptops from Dell and Asus. I guess it's been a good run with my last few laptops being from HP. I was hoping I could use my previous HP power adapters but this HP laptop uses a different adapter from previous laptops so I was losing that advantage. A useable keyboard is of course much more important than the power supply or brand. Maybe today's users just don't use the numeric keypad.

Hi @LukeVA,

Thank you for sharing your honest feedback with us. We truly regret to hear about your experience and the disappointment with the keyboard layout on your recent HP laptop.

We understand how important usability and comfort are, especially when it comes to the keyboard, and your comments about the placement of the power button and numeric keypad are completely valid. Design decisions like these are made to balance size, functionality, and evolving usage trends, but we also know that they may not suit everyone’s needs.

Your note about the images on our website is also very helpful clearer visibility of the keyboard layout would definitely help customers make a more informed choice before purchase. We will forward this feedback to the relevant team so it can be considered in future updates.

As for power adapters, you are right, newer models sometimes use different connectors to support faster charging or slimmer form factors. Still, we recognize that consistency with previous generations is something many customers value.

While we can’t change the design of this model, your input is important, and we truly appreciate your loyalty to HP over the years. If you’d like, we can help point you toward models with more traditional layouts that may better suit your preferences.

Take care and have an amazing day!
