Welcome to HP Support Community, @BirdofParadise

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP laptop is overheating, it may display an error message, stop responding, or you may notice louder fan noise. Follow the steps below to help prevent overheating and to cool down your device effectively:

Step 1: Clean the Vents and Inspect the Fans
Turn Off the Computer: Make sure your laptop is powered down and unplugged from any power source.
Locate the Vents: Identify the air vents, typically located on the sides or bottom of the laptop.
Use Compressed Air: Gently blow out dust and debris using a can of compressed air. This helps improve airflow and reduces fan strain.
Allow to Cool: Let the laptop cool down for 10 minutes before powering it back on.

Step 2: Manage Applications for Better Efficiency
Close Unused Apps: Shut down applications not in use to reduce CPU load.
Manage Startup Programs: Disable unnecessary startup programs via Task Manager.
Lower Graphics Settings in Games: If gaming, reduce the graphic settings to lessen the heat output.
Close Browser Tabs: Close unused browser tabs to save on processing power.

Step 3: Ensure Proper Ventilation
Positioning: Place your laptop on a hard surface, avoiding beds or couches where airflow can be blocked.
Space Around Vents: Maintain at least 15 cm (6 inches) of clearance around each vent.

Step 4: Use HP Software for Temperature Management
For HP laptops equipped with HP CoolSense or HP Command Center, adjust thermal profiles to enhance cooling.
HP CoolSense: This tool can automatically adjust performance and fan settings based on your device's motion.
HP Command Center: Available on selected models to manage internal temperature.

Step 5: Update BIOS and Drivers
Access HP Support: Visit HP Support to find drivers specific to your model.
Install Updates: Keep your operating system and drivers updated, including BIOS updates, via HP Support Assistant or directly from the HP website.

Step 6: Test Hardware
Run Diagnostics: Use HP PC Hardware Diagnostics to check for hardware issues that could cause overheating.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
