HP Pavilion Plus 14 inch Laptop PC 14-ey0000 (7X856AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

My laptop has been recently been experiencing battery/power issues:

  1. While on battery power, the laptop will sometimes randomly shut down without warning, and I am unable to turn it back on unless I plug the device back in to AC power. I've also had this issue around a year ago, but it miraculously resolved itself but started happening very recently.
  2. Once, when on battery power, my laptop displayed that it had 100% battery when it actually only had 70%. Plugging the charger back in fixed this but it's strange that it happened in the first place.
  3. Once, when on battery power, my laptop was at 70% and I got a low battery message popup. While the popup was active, the Windows battery indicator showed the low battery icon, but went away when I closed it.

Fixes I've tried:

  • Calibrating the battery. When the first issue started happening, my battery wasn't calibrated. After calibrating the battery (and verifying that it is calibrated with the UEFI Diagnostics and HP Support Assistant), the issue still persists. My battery status shows as "Normal".
  • Updating drivers. Device Manager indicates that my battery drivers are up-to-date, though there are some other potential fixes that I haven't tried, such as reinstalling drivers.
  • Changing my sleep/power settings. None of them seemed out of the ordinary, or at least shouldn't be the culprit.

Every time the issue happened, my battery did not seem to be overheating and was at a normal temperature. I also couldn't find a reproducible trigger for why this happens. It can happen when I"m actively doing something, or when I'm completely idle and doing nothing.

Additionally, it doesn't seem like my battery health is failing, as my Full Charge Capacity is at 84% and my Cycle Count is 146/1000. I don't believe the cause of this issue was a Windows update since I hadn't updated my laptop recently when the issue started happening (as far as I know). I am also on the latest version of Windows 11 23H2.

Please help me. I need this laptop for school!!!

Hi @houndz,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thanks for the detailed breakdown. You've done an excellent job troubleshooting so far. Based on everything you've tried and the symptoms you're seeing, this appears to be a firmware-level power management issue, possibly involving:

  • Embedded Controller (EC) firmware
  • Battery telemetry miscommunication
  • Windows power state corruption

Even though your battery health is reported as “Normal,” the erratic behavior suggests the system isn’t interpreting battery data correctly.

1. Perform an EC Reset (Embedded Controller)

This clears low-level power logic and can fix battery misreporting.

Steps:

  1. Shut down the laptop.
  2. Unplug the charger.
  3. Press and hold the power button for 30–60 seconds.
  4. Plug the charger back in and power on.

2. Reinstall Battery Drivers

Even if Device Manager says they’re up-to-date, a clean reinstall can help.

Steps:

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Batteries.
  3. Right-click Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery and choose Uninstall device.
  4. Restart your laptop — Windows will reinstall the driver automatically.

3. Update BIOS and EC Firmware

HP may have released updates that fix battery telemetry issues.

Install the latest:

  • BIOS update
  • System firmware
  • Chipset drivers

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Hello, I have tried the 1st and 2nd fixes, but neither of them solved my issue. As for the 3rd fix, I could not find the applicable EC firmware update, and I have already updated my BIOS (multiple times actually). I'm starting to think it's a hardware issue since I have had cases where I would try to turn on the laptop when it is off, and then it would shut down in the middle of turning on, and wouldn't turn back on until I plugged the device in.

Hi @houndz,

Thank you for getting back and letting me know that you still have an issue. Please try these steps if this doesn't then pc might need to be repaired.

1. Disable Fast Startup

Fast Startup can interfere with proper battery state initialization:

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do.
  • Click Change settings that are currently unavailable.
  • Uncheck Turn on fast startup.
  • Save changes and restart.

2. Monitor with Battery Report

Run this command in Command Prompt: powercfg /batteryreport

It will generate a report at:  C:\Users\<YourUsername>\battery-report.html

This can help track inconsistencies in battery behavior over time.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Hello, I've already had fast startup disabled from when the issue occurred a year ago.

Parts of my battery report are attached. Nothing seems out of the ordinary to me. Note that recently I've been just keeping the battery plugged in to avoid the random shutdowns. Let me know if you need any other part of the report.
