Yes it is safe and preferred to game while plugged in. Doing so will increase the power available to the hardware and give you better performance of the game.
It will also prevent battery recycles from occuring which bring the battery to its end of life sooner.
You can certainly take the battery out also, but its safe to leave it in as the circuitry is designed to not overcharge once the battery reaches 100%.
