2 weeks ago my laptop made a burning smell and powered itself off. Now it won't turn on , no lights nothing whatsoever.

I've had a two week battle with HP support and eventually they agreed to return it for repair(this is another story which I hope to forget). It still has 2 months warranty remaining.

My suspicion is that motherboard is fried.

Does anyone have any experiences of HP repairs they want to share ?

If they refuse to repair or replace the faulty laptop, is there anything else I could do i.e. escalate?

Welcome to the HP Community User Forum.

The mission of our Community is to provide help when we can do so.

We are a user group -- We do not speak for HP Support.

You might want to start your "share with me" conversation on a social media site.

This is not the place to that though I do understand the desire discuss "What if".

As to the rest -

Nothing bad has happened to you yet.

That means, HP has agreed to accept the device for possible repair.

If the repair does not go as you expect, then sure -- within the boundaries of our Rules of Participation -- you can certainly come back and leave your constructive comments in the Community.  People do that sometimes.
