Hi @KateIdaho,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
I understand your laptop shows “charging” even though the battery is already at 100%, and you’re concerned whether this is a problem or a safety issue. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.
Understand normal charging behavior
When the battery reaches 100%, the laptop stops actively charging but may still display “charging.”
This is normal behavior and helps maintain battery health without overcharging.
Check battery status after unplugging
Unplug the charger and use the laptop for 5–10 minutes.
Plug it back in and see if the status changes from “charging” to “plugged in, not charging.”
Restart the laptop
Shut down the system completely and power it back on.
This refreshes battery reporting and clears temporary status glitches.
Perform a power reset
Turn off the laptop and disconnect the charger.
Hold the power button for 15 seconds, reconnect the charger, and turn the laptop on.
Check battery health in BIOS
Restart the laptop and press Esc repeatedly, then select System Diagnostics.
Run the battery test to confirm the battery is functioning normally.
Update BIOS and power management drivers
Open HP Support Assistant and check for BIOS or battery-related updates.
Updates can correct inaccurate charging status readings.
Review HP battery protection settings
In BIOS or HP software, check for Battery Health or Adaptive Battery settings.
Some settings intentionally keep the battery at 100% while still showing “charging.”
Check charger and charging port
Ensure the charger is the original HP adapter and fits securely.
A loose or incompatible adapter can cause the status to remain on “charging.”
I hope this helps.

Thank you for replying; my answers are in line below:
Check battery status after unplugging
Unplug the charger and use the laptop for 5–10 minutes.
Plug it back in and see if the status changes from “charging” to “plugged in, not charging.”
The icon in the system bar never changes from charging to plugged in, not charging. My previous HP laptop (Windows 10) showed plugged in not charging. This laptop (Windows 11) has an icon (wasn't there until a few days ago) in the system tray which is a green battery with a lightning bolt mid-way. The battery is showing 100% but also charging all day.
Restart the laptop
Shut down the system completely and power it back on.
This refreshes battery reporting and clears temporary status glitches.
Did that no change.
Perform a power reset
Turn off the laptop and disconnect the charger.
Hold the power button for 15 seconds, reconnect the charger, and turn the laptop on.
Tried this but holding the power button for 15 seconds turned it on, so essentially which was a reboot. No change.
Check battery health in BIOS
Restart the laptop and press Esc repeatedly, then select System Diagnostics.
Run the battery test to confirm the battery is functioning normally.
System Diagnostics shows no issue with the battery.
Update BIOS and power management drivers
Open HP Support Assistant and check for BIOS or battery-related updates.
Updates can correct inaccurate charging status readings.
Laptop is up to date on all drivers.
Review HP battery protection settings
In BIOS or HP software, check for Battery Health or Adaptive Battery settings.
Some settings intentionally keep the battery at 100% while still showing “charging.”
What settings am I looking for?
Check charger and charging port
Ensure the charger is the original HP adapter and fits securely.
A loose or incompatible adapter can cause the status to remain on “charging.”
The laptop is 10 months old and I'm using the charger that came with it.
I hope this helps.

Hi @KateIdaho,
Thank you for the detailed update, that really helps. Based on everything you’ve tested, this does not indicate a safety issue or battery fault. What you’re seeing is expected behavior on many newer HP laptops running Windows 11 with HP battery protection enabled.
I understand your laptop stays at 100% and continuously shows “charging” with a green battery and lightning icon, even though diagnostics report the battery is healthy. Let me clarify what’s happening and where to check the related settings.
On newer HP models:
The system stops actual charging at 100% to prevent overcharging.
Windows 11 may still display “charging” instead of “plugged in, not charging.”
HP’s firmware manages this internally, not Windows, so the icon behavior is different from older Windows 10 laptops.
The green battery with a lightning bolt indicates external power is connected, not that the battery is actively being filled.
Since:
Battery diagnostics passed
The percentage stays stable at 100%
There is no heat, swelling, or rapid drain
This confirms normal battery management behavior.
Where to check HP battery protection settings
Depending on your model, the setting may exist in BIOS or be automatically enforced.
Restart the laptop
Tap Esc repeatedly → press F10 (BIOS Setup)
Look for one of these (names vary by model):
Battery Health Manager
Adaptive Battery Optimizer
Battery Care Function
If you see options such as:
Maximize battery health
Adaptive / Managed by HP
Leave them enabled, they are designed to keep the battery at 100% safely while plugged in.
Some models do not allow manual control and manage this automatically, in that case, not seeing a setting is normal.
Your laptop is not overcharging
Leaving it plugged in is safe
The battery is being maintained, not continuously charged
This is a Windows 11 + HP firmware behavior change, not a defect
If you unplug the charger and the battery percentage begins to drop normally, everything is working exactly as intended.
I hope this helps.
