HP Pavilion 15-cs2073cl
Microsoft Windows 11

I have a 15=cs2073cl laptop that is about 5 years old. I took it to a shop to have the screen and battery replaced. At the shop, the tech told me that the laptop was not charging unless he used a genuine HP charger. This was strange to me, since I had been using a generic charger for years without any problems. The tech found no issue with the power connector, my generic charger or any one of the usual suspects. I purchased a 65 W HP power adapter as a solution, since I do need to charge my laptop.

My computer has changed its behavior. It used to be that whenever I plugged in the charger, the battery icon on the task bar would immediately change, acknowledging that it was plugged in. Now, when I plug in the adapter, literally several minutes go by before the icon changes and the laptop seemingly recognizes it is being charged.

Another strange thing. When I'm working unplugged, if the battery gets discharged to the point Windows starts the power save mode, the laptop turns sluggish. I can plug it in, but, again, it takes several minutes before the laptop recognizes it's plugged in and the sluggishness persists. It seems to me that it is running some sort of background routine that uses a lot of resources, but I have no idea what that is. When this happens, I have received warnings from apps telling me that the computer is running out of resources.

It's been bad enough that the laptop has shut down because the battery is discharged, and the laptop has not acknowledged it is plugged in.

I really believe this is a software issue, simply because nothing in the hardware is different (except for a brand new, original battery). The connector must be OK because once the laptop recognizes it's plugged in, it charges normally.  Perhaps it's something in the BIOS? Perhaps one of the Windows 11 upgrades that disagrees with HP hardware? Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Enrique

Hi @guitaric60,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I’m really sorry you’re dealing with this frustrating issue. I can only imagine how inconvenient it must be to have your PC struggle to recognize the adapter after changing the battery, especially when you're relying on the original charger. Let’s try a simple yet effective step first—a BIOS restore. This can sometimes help reset the system and get things back on track.

If you’re comfortable with it, go ahead and try restoring the BIOS, and let me know how it goes. If the issue persists, we’ll explore updating the BIOS and chipset together to make sure your system runs smoothly again.

BIOS Restore:
1) Shutdown the computer.

2) Hold down the Windows and B button together while the computer is still turned off.

3) Turn on the computer and continue to hold the Windows and B button until a BIOS Recovery screen appears.

4) Follow on-screen instructions and click on OK

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
