Microsoft Windows 11

I can use my HP Notebook. Unfortunately it only user the power from the battery. I must turn the computer off, charge the battery to 100% full. When I turn on the computer, it only uses the power from the battery.

Hi @cbayard

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

It’s understandably frustrating when your laptop refuses to draw power from the wall and relies solely on battery—even when plugged in. This behavior often points to a power delivery fault, firmware miscommunication, or a charging circuit issue.

Let’s walk through a few focused steps to help restore proper AC power usage.

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting for AC Power Not Being Used

1. Perform a Hardware Reset

  • Shut down the laptop completely.
  • Unplug the charger and remove any connected peripherals.
  • Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect the charger and power it on.

This clears residual electrical states that may interfere with power detection.

2. Check Battery and Power Adapter Status

  • Open the HP App from the Start menu.
  • Navigate to Power > Battery Health Manager.
  • Confirm whether the laptop detects the AC adapter.
  • If available, switch charging mode to Maximize My Battery Health or Let HP Manage My Battery Charging.

3. Run HP Hardware Diagnostics

  • Restart the laptop and press Esc, then F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
  • Select Component Tests > Power > Battery and Adapter.
  • Run both tests and note the results.

4. Update BIOS and Chipset Drivers

  • Visit: HP Notebook Drivers and BIOS
  • Enter your laptop’s model number and select Windows 11.
  • Download and install the latest:
    • BIOS update
    • Intel or AMD chipset driver
    • Battery management or power driver, if listed

These updates improve power communication between hardware and firmware.

5. Inspect the Charging Port and Adapter

  • Gently clean the charging port with a soft brush or compressed air.
  • Try a different wall outlet.
  • If available, test with another compatible HP charger to rule out adapter failure.

6. Monitor Power Behavior in Windows

  • Right-click the battery icon > Power & sleep settings > Additional power settings
  • Select High Performance or Balanced
  • Avoid battery saver modes, which may limit AC power usage

If the laptop continues to ignore wall power after these steps, it may help to observe whether the battery icon changes when plugged in or if the LED near the charging port responds. Let me know what you notice—I’ll guide you further if needed.

You’re doing everything right by staying attentive and proactive. With a few adjustments, your laptop should return to stable power behavior.
