HP Envy Model 15-aq100na
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My laptop has started making a knocking noise.

I believe this is the hard drive and have run utilities like check disc.  The check disc says it has cleared an issue but the issue doesn't go away and when I rerun check-disc it identifies the error again.

The laptop is still working well.

Do I need to buy a new disc and how big a deal is it to install and setup?

Welcome to HP Community

I have gone through your Post and would like to help

I suggest you run a  Hard drive Test from F2 Diagnostic. If the Test fails then the Hard drive needs to be replaced

- Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the Notebook.
- Turn on the computer and immediately press Esc repeatedly, about once every second.
- When the menu appears, press the F2 key.
- On the main menu, click Component Tests and Hard drive

You can contact HP Support for Hard drive replacement

Thanks for the advice.

I've run the diagnostics and it has been inconclusive.  The test passes but with warnings.

The warnings are on the DST check (both long and short).

I dont get any further info though but am assuming I need a new hard disc.

I have saved the log files but cant open them as they are .SIG format.  This process could be simpler!

The warning indicates the Hard drive is failing and might give out anytime

I suggest you backup your data if possible and contact HP Support for Service Options
