Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

About a year ago I bought two identical Elitebook 850 G3s for myself and my partner.  Hers still works fine, but at some point mine has developed a problem whereby wherever I do a shutdown, hibernate or sleep then although the machine appears to be inactive the fan starts running at full speed, the networking light goes orange, and the mute light remains on (white).  BIOS and drivers appear to be up to date.  Help, please ... if I turn off my machine then the battery is dead by the morning.

I know that two identical computers should act the same, but that does not always seem to be the case.

Sounds like yours is working hard even after you turn it off, especially if it drains the battery overnight.

What I would do is go into Control Panel (not Settings) and change the options to Shut Down the laptop when you power it off.  It will take longer to boot up after that, but it should not be running and not draining the battery.

Thanks, WAWood - I think I have done as you suggested ...

... but I'm afraid it doesn't seem to have made any difference ...😔,  When I press the power button I get a "shutting down" message for a few seconds, then the power button light goes off, but the fan still starts and the wireless button goes orange and the mute button stays white.

I am very confused!!

At the bottom of that window, under Shut Down settings, uncheck sleep and hibernate.  See if that makes a difference.

Sorry, no difference (quite apart from the fact that sleep and hibernate are actually useful things that I would be loath to lose!).

Sorry, don't know what else to suggest.
