So, my laptop fan won't spin. I'm currently very confused on why the fan won't spin as I don't see any problems with the fans or the bios. My fans worked last week, but this week my fans have stopped working for an unknown reason and caused my temps to rise up to 80c. I've dismantled the laptop snd checked the fans physically and can confirm that the fan doesn't have any damages, loose cables, difficulty spinning etc, i've checked the bios and set the fan settings to "always on", set the fan settings to "active" in the battery/power advanced settings. I really don't know what to do now, so if you read this please do reply with a possible solution. Thanks

Hi,

My advice is to change the fan. It is possible that the fan stops working for no apparent reason. The motor in the fan can simply die after some time of use. I have changed many fans in laptops over the years. Anyway, online you will find fans for about 15$.

You could also try applying about 5V to the laptop fan and see if it spins.

Hope it helps,

David

You seem to have done all you can, except to physically disassemble the "motor" that spins the blades, to look for electrical problems, or to take a well-used 9V battery (much lower amperage than a brand-new battery) to "jury-rig" a connection from the battery to the electrical leads of the fan, to see if directly (and briefly) applying independent power to the fan, to see if it will work at all.

Suggestion: replace it.

Once you have the correct part-number for your model, see: http://PartSurfer.hp.com

to order the part from this "most-trusted" site.

Hi,

Sorry did not get back to you right away, on the weekends go scuba diving, especially with good weather we are having here in Italy.

Anyway the cost to replace fan by yourself is low. You do not need to buy the whole heatsink assembly, as you can remove the fan from the heatsink assembly. You will need new thermal paste. Get high quality stuff (silver) and apply little, a grain of rice. It will even out with pressure of heatsink. Remove old thermal paste from heatsink and chips with alcohool and cloth (use soft plastic scraper with there are hardened parts.

If there are any thermal pads under hatsinks, just reuse them.

To get replacement fan look online with model of your PC. Here is an example:

Let me know if you need further help,

David
