Over time, the hinges on my laptop have snapped near the base and have detatched from the display panel, making it difficult to open and close the laptop, and sometimes the display panel will fall on either side, causing the hinge bases to stick out. I experienced a similar problem with the right hinge a couple months ago, and had it replaced.
From what I've read, this is a common problem with HP laptops. The laptop is out of warranty, and I don't know if this is something that can be resolved, or if the only solution is to buy a replacement.
I'd be grateful if you can offer any help and suggestions.
