My laptop is plugged into the charger and indicates that it is charging. However, it is losing power and is now only at 8% even though it indicates it is charging. The laptop is incredibly hot to the touch (bottom) as is the charger.

@Moetl, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.
I understand your HP Pavilion Laptop is plugged in and shows it's charging, but the battery is still draining and the device is overheating. Let's work through this together.
Possible Causes
- Faulty or underpowered charger
- Battery health degradation
- Overheating due to dust or thermal paste issues
- Power management or BIOS issues
Step-by-Step Troubleshooting
Check the Power Adapter
- Ensure you're using the original HP charger that came with your laptop.
- If the charger is unusually hot, it might be faulty. Try using a different compatible HP charger if available.
Perform a Hard Reset
This can clear temporary hardware glitches:
- Shut down the laptop.
- Unplug the charger and remove all external devices.
- Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
- Reconnect the charger and power on the laptop.
Run HP Hardware Diagnostics
To check battery and thermal health:
- Turn off the laptop.
- Turn it back on and immediately press F2 repeatedly.
- Select Component Tests > Battery and run the test.
- Also run Thermal and AC Adapter tests.
Check Battery Report
Generate a battery report to assess battery health:
- Press Windows + X > Windows Terminal (Admin).
- Type: powercfg /batteryreport
- The report will be saved to C:\Users\<YourUsername>\battery-report.html.
Update BIOS and Drivers
Outdated firmware can cause power and thermal issues:
- Visit the HP Software and Driver Downloads page.
- Enter your product.
- Download and install the latest BIOS, Chipset, and Power Management drivers.
Inspect for Overheating
- Ensure vents are not blocked.
- Use the laptop on a hard, flat surface.
- Consider using a cooling pad.
- If overheating persists, internal cleaning or thermal paste reapplication may be needed (best done by a technician).
If none of the above steps resolve the issue, the battery or motherboard may need servicing. In that case, we suggest you please visit the nearest HP authorized service center, the service team will check and assist you.
