I have an HP Pavilion Laptop PC 15-eg0000 (9WF73AV). I bought this laptop about 3-4 years ago. When I bought the laptop, the keyboard had a backlight function with three brightness settings. Low, medium, and high (bright). I have now come to realize that the highest/brightest backlight setting is dimmer than usual. I am at my wit's end trying to figure out how to fix it. BIOS is apparently not supported on my computer, all my windows stuff is up to date otherwise, I have restarted my computer, and I use my laptop plugged in most of the time. None of these has fixed the problem. Is there a way to fix the brightness of the backlight? Do I need to change/replace the keyboard? Any guidance would be firmly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi @CheezeyNoodle,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If the backlight on your HP Pavilion Laptop PC 15-eg0000 is dimmer than usual, even at the highest setting, and you've already tried several troubleshooting steps, there are a few more things you can check before considering replacing the keyboard. Here’s a comprehensive guide to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:
Software and Settings
Check Keyboard Backlight Settings:
- Ensure you are using the correct key combination to adjust the backlight brightness. This is usually done by pressing the Fn key along with one of the function keys (F1-F12) that has a keyboard light icon.
HP Command Center:
- Some HP laptops come with HP Command Center software that allows you to control the keyboard backlight brightness. Ensure this software is installed and check the settings.
Update or Reinstall Drivers:
- Update Keyboard Drivers:
- Press Win + X and select Device Manager.
- Expand the Keyboards section.
- Right-click on your keyboard device and select Update driver.
- Update or Reinstall HP System Event Utility:
- This utility controls special function keys, including the backlight. You can download and reinstall it from the HP Support website.
Check Windows Settings:
- Ensure that Windows is not overriding any backlight settings.
- Go to Settings > System > Power & sleep > Additional power settings and ensure that the power plan is set to Balanced.
Hardware and Firmware
Check BIOS/UEFI Settings:
- Even if you mentioned BIOS is not supported, some laptops have backlight settings accessible via BIOS/UEFI.
- Restart your laptop and press Esc or F10 during startup to enter the BIOS/UEFI settings.
- Look for keyboard backlight settings and adjust if necessary.
Reset BIOS to Default Settings:
- Resetting BIOS to its default settings can sometimes resolve issues related to hardware.
- Enter BIOS/UEFI settings and look for an option to reset to default settings.
Check for Firmware Updates:
- Firmware updates can sometimes resolve hardware-related issues.
- Check the HP Support website for any firmware updates for your specific laptop model.
Physical Inspection and Cleaning
Clean the Keyboard:
- Dust and debris can accumulate under the keys and affect the backlight. Use compressed air to gently clean the keyboard.
Check for Physical Damage:
- Inspect the keyboard for any signs of damage or wear. If the backlight appears dim only in certain areas, it might indicate an issue with the LED lights.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
